Electron Holography of Magnetic Fields in Nanoscale Materials and Progress Towards a Distributed Research Infrastructure for Electron Microscopy in Europe

Rafal Dunin-Borkowski is Director of the Institute for Microstructure Research and the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons in Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany and Professor of Experimental Physics in RWTH Aachen University, Germany. His Ph.D. (1990-1994) was carried out in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in the University of Cambridge. After working as a postdoctoral research scientist in the University of Cambridge, Arizona State University and Oxford University, between 2000 and 2006 he held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in the University of Cambridge. Between 2007 and 2010, he led the establishment of the Centre for Electron Nanoscopy in the Technical University of Denmark. He specializes in the characterization of magnetic and electronic materials at the highest spatial resolution using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques, including aberration corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and off-axis electron holography. In 2009 he was awarded the Ernst Ruska Prize of the German Society for Electron Microscopy. In 2012, 2017 and 2019 he was awarded Advanced, Proof of Concept and Synergy Grants by the European Research Council. He has published more than 900 journal papers, conference papers and book chapters, has given more than 340 invited lectures and seminars, has been a member of 40 advisory boards and steering committees, has organized 45 conference symposia and workshops and has received 20 prizes for papers presented at conferences and 6 prizes for science as art.

This year’s Rory Comerford memorial lecture will be given by Prof. Maria McNamara (University College Cork). The lecture, entitled “Go Big or Go Home: Making and Using an Optical Mesoscope for Biomedical Imaging”, was held in University College Dublin.

The first recent meeting of the Irish Microscopy and Imaging Community will take place on Friday October 15th from 1 – 5pm (Irish Standard Time). The 2021 MSI (Virtual) Symposium was hosted by Queens University Belfast with the help of the Institute of Physics (IOP). The symposium brought together researchers from around the world for discussions on various microscopy themes such as advances in image analysis, solid-state physics, nanomedicine, as well as materials and biological microscopy applications.
